Man moving cargo into a truck

How Northeast Truck Rental controls fleet theft in a high-crime environment

Northeast Truck Rental is greater New York City’s premier provider of moving and cargo truck rentals. With a legacy that spans decades, they serve their customers with a commitment to quality, integrity, and community.
In addition to its core business of moving and transport rentals Northeast Truck Rental has built two innovative lines, one serving the specialty needs of New York City’s rich art gallery culture, and the other tailor-built to serve New York’s expansive entertainment industry.
While growing to a combined fleet of over 200 vehicles and a reach across greater NYC, new hurdles can arise.

Vehicle theft in New York City skyrockets

After the pandemic hit, car theft across the city surged to 191% higher than pre-pandemic baselines.
Northeast Truck Rental needed a comprehensive solution to operating in this challenging environment.

In this climate, Northeast Truck Rental needed a solution that was quick to implement but comprehensive enough to meet their needs.

1. Industry leading devices with simple installation

Northeast Truck Rental worked with James Fish at One Step GPS to select plugin devices as the ideal tool for the majority of their fleet.
Logistically speaking, these devices are appealing for several key reasons:
  • They’re compatible with virtually any vehicle built after 1997
  • They can easily be hidden for an indetectable installation
  • The entire installation process takes minutes and requires no specialist knowledge
From the standpoint of functionality these devices provide everything Northeast Truck Rental needed to overcome the problems they were experiencing:
  • Real-time location updates
  • Accuracy within ~6 feet
  • Complete driving history with stops
  • After hours vehicle use alerts for trucks in the lot
  • Device tamper alerts
  • Alerts for speeding, hard driving, and much more
  • Battery backup so devices continue to report even if discovered and removed from power source

2. Real-time visibility

The ability to monitor every vehicle in real-time is the key that pulls the entire solution together.
In the One Step GPS platform, the Devices tab gives a wealth of information about the location and condition of every vehicle in your fleet:

In the event of theft or abandonment, the managers at Northeast Truck Rental can use this information to instantly share vehicle locations with authorities and drastically reduce the time-to-recovery of lost and stolen vehicles.
The History tab gives complete routes driven, including all stops and alerts triggered along the route:

The Zones tab is used to designate areas which can then be used to trigger alerts and generate reports when vehicles enter and exit:

Parking lots, storage yards and shops can all be defined and used to trigger alerts when a vehicle leaves the zone after-hours or without authorization.

3. Fleet security

A customizable suite of over 25 alerts helps the managers at Northeast Truck Rental detect and rapidly combat theft.
Using the Alerts tab in the One Step GPS platform, each manager is configured to receive instant notifications by email, text, and in-app for behavior that indicates theft or misuse:

Sometimes thieves will leave the unit in the vehicle, unaware that it is still reporting real-time location. However, tampering with the unit is so rare that One Step GPS has helped companies recover the devices from chop shops, still installed.
The Starter Disable tab allows managers to remotely disable vehicles with an additionally installed kill switch:

Once theft is detected the manager simply logs in, clicks on the Starter Disable tab, selects the vehicle and disconnects the engine electrical supply.
